The maestro’s signature repertoire: Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, along with rare recordings of works by Milhaud, Blacher, and Eck First-ever official CD release: a collection of Stokowski’s 1955 SWR live recordings Master Stokowski, nicknamed the “Magician of the Orchestra” for his highly distinctive musical approach—which included bold arrangements of J.S. Bach’s organ works, such as the “Toccata and Fugue,” for full orchestra, as well as modifications to original compositions that often sparked both praise and criticism (1882–1977). Featured here are live recordings from 1955—a period when his work in the United States left a strong impression—during his guest appearances with the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. With the exception of Blacher and Eck, all of the works are well-known, but this release—featuring significantly improved sound quality thanks to the use of official recordings from the SWR archives—is sure to be widely welcomed. Of course, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5—a piece for which he was renowned for his dynamic interpretation—is featured, but it is also noteworthy that he included works by contemporary composers Blacher and Eck, who were popular at the time. Incidentally, while Eck’s work is based on Rameau, it has been significantly transformed into a rich, German-style sound. Throughout the entire recording, the artist’s reputation as a peerless entertainer who makes music engaging and enjoyable to listen to shines through. [Comment provided by King International]
