Exploring the Deep Connection Between Vivaldi and Prague Through a Collection of Slightly Unusual Works Vivaldi’s famous *The Four Seasons* was dedicated to Count Wenzel von Morzin of Prague. In 1718, the count traveled to Venice with his “orchestra of extraordinary skill” and hired Vivaldi as “Maestro di Musica.” This marked the beginning of an era of close musical exchange between Venice and Prague. This relationship had a profound influence on an entire generation of Czech composers. This program, *Vivaldi in Prague*, is centered precisely on that relationship. The program includes a concerto by František Ilaňek, who served in Count Morzin’s chapel, studied in Venice from 1724 to 1726, and is believed to have been associated with Vivaldi, as well as a concerto by Antonín Reichenauer, who was strongly influenced by the Vivaldi school. Furthermore, the program features Vivaldi’s bassoon concerto dedicated to Count Morzin, an aria from a Vivaldi opera performed in Prague in 1730, and two arias from a Vivaldi pastiche (a patchwork opera) reconstructed by Robert Lawson specifically for this project. These pastiches were compiled by the Venetian impresario Antonio Denzio using material from popular Vivaldi operas, to which he added new lyrics (including Czech) and presented to Prague audiences.
