Description:
Royal Concerts with two harpsichordsThe appearance of F. Couperin's "Royal Concerts" with two harpsichords. Performing will be Pierre Garon & Mathieu Boutinot, virtuosos who support France's up-and-coming ancient music ensemble with their bass passages and also play as soloists. Theorbo and baroque guitars join the ensemble for some of the pieces in Nos. 2 and 4, recreating the intimate and extravagant musical gatherings that took place in the royal palaces of the time. During the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, music was played at all hours in Versailles. After 1682, when the king and his court moved to the new royal residence, music was played throughout the royal daily routine (l'ordinaire), and only when the king slept was there silence prevailed. In 1714 and 1715, François Couperin (then organist of the Royal Chapel) was ordered by Louis XIV to organize "small concerts" with a few other musicians "almost every Sunday of the year".In 1722, a few years after the king's death, Couperin published a selection of the best pieces performed at these "Petites Concerts" under the title "Concère Royal" as an appendix to his "Collection of Pieces de Clavesan" (1722). The collection consists of four suites grouped according to key, essentially in the form of a classical dance suite, with the instrumentation left to the players. [Pierre Garon] was familiar with various instruments from an early age, and at the age of 10 he discovered that the harpsichord was the instrument that could express everything for him. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris with Olivier Beaumont and Blandine Lannoux. He also studied under the tutelage of Verlé, Antaï, and others. He also plays in the ensemble "Le Caravanseraille" led by Bertrand Cuyet, and has performed with instrumentalists and vocalists, both solo and ensemble. [Mathieu Boutinot] studied organ with Olivier Vernet and harpsichord with Blandine Verlet and others. He plays all keyboard instruments, from the medieval clavitsitellium to the symphonic organ and even the fortepiano. He also participated in Pichon & Pygmalion's "Matthew Passion" (2022 Record Academy Awards, KKC-6514/HMM-902691) as a bass continuo player. After working as a church organist, he also began training as an instrument builder, which had been his dream since childhood. [Thibault Roussel] is a theorbo, guitar, and lute player who plays with the Ensemble Correspondances, Pygmalion, and other contemporary and up-and-coming ancient music ensembles. King International
