Description:
Superb singing team and superb instrumental parts! Christie's "The Crowning of Poppea" recorded live at the 2018 Salzburg Festival Christie describes Monteverdi's masterpiece "The Crowning of Poppea" as "one of the greatest works on earth". Christie's first recording with a superb cast is now available again, in a performance that received rave reviews at the 2018 Salzburg Festival. *This is a reissue of HAF 8902622 (out of print), which was released in 2019. It does not come with the accompanying DVD. The dictator Nerone falls in love with the charming Poppea, removes all obstacles, including his wife (Otteravia), and the two are united, and despite the amoral, if not outright amoral, story that the pure and righteous do not always win, the music is so wonderful that it continues to draw people in. The Crowning of Poppea" is full of charm. Christie plays the harpsichord and conducts with a lightness that brings out the full dramatic power of the story. The 16-member instrumental ensemble is divided into two groups in a pit on the stage, and they play as if they were characters in the performance, standing up during important parts, just like the singers. Poppea is sung by Sonya Yoncheva, a Bulgarian diva who won the 2010 Domingo's "Operalia" competition and is active internationally. Nerone is Kate Lindsay, a fast-rising singer from the United States who will appear in Berlioz's "Romeo and Juliet" with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Harding in September 2019, and will also play the composer in the Vienna State Opera's "Ariadne of Naxos" in October. Other singers from Christie's "The Garden of Voices" and others are among the best singers one could hope for. The singers throughout the entire performance are extremely stable and even comfortable, and the instrumental parts are also flawless. The instrumental parts are also flawless. The sense of unity between the bass and the singers in the third act when Ottavia sings "Farewell, Rome" is breathtakingly beautiful. This is a reissue of HAF 8902622 (out of print) without DVD.
