Purcell, who composed over 400 works during his short 36-year life, is known by the nickname “the English Orpheus,” and His compositional style skillfully fuses elements of Elizabethan English music with Italian and French musical styles he adopted, creating a unique and free-spirited worldview. Although Scholl has performed Purcell’s works on numerous stages, this marks his first recording of the composer’s songs.
