Guitarist Kenny Burrell made his debut on Blue Note Records in 1956 and went on to release a series of masterpiece albums with the label over the next seven years; this 1963 recording is the culmination of that body of work.
Delving deep into the blues, the album exudes a captivating late-night atmosphere thanks to a soulful lineup featuring tenor saxophonist Stanley Talentin, bassist Major Holly Jr., drummer Bill English, and conga player Ray Barrett. Barrell’s originals—including “Chitlins’ Con Carne,” “Midnight Blue,” “Saturday Night Blues,” and the stunning guitar solo piece “Soul Lament”—all Barrel originals—form the foundation of this timeless masterpiece, while the artwork by Reed Miles, considered one of the greatest album covers of all time, further enhances its appeal.
