Description:
Britten's masterpiece "The Turn of the Screw" is now available on DVD! John Wilson & Sinfonia of London are on a roll! The Turn of the Screw" was recorded as a video work in a theater that still retains its Victorian-era atmosphere! Following the worldwide success of Respighi's "Roman Trilogy" (RCHSA5261/CHSA5261), "English Music for Strings" (RCHSA5264/CHSA5264) and "Dutilleux: Ballet Music "Wolf"" (RCHSA5263/CHSA5263) have been selected by Record Art magazine and John Wilson is one of the hottest conductors in the world today, and has received rave reviews and was named Editor's Choice by Gramophone magazine. The film of Benjamin Britten's (1913-1976) masterpiece "The Turn of the Screw," featuring notable soloists including Leo Jemison as treble (boy soprano), will be performed at the Wilton's Music Hall, which opened in the mid-19th century and still retains the atmosphere of those days. A stage performance of Britten's "The Turn of the Screw" with Opera Glass Works was scheduled for March 2020, but was cancelled due to the lockdown in England. With weeks of exciting rehearsals already underway, the production team, unable to let go of the production, decided to complete "The Turn of the Screw" as a video work for broadcast. The video was shot not simply live, but in a hybrid format that honors the spirit of the original theatrical production, resulting in a stunning production in which the special atmosphere and charm of the Victorian era of Wilton's Music Hall is perfectly matched with the haunting ambiguity of this opera. Britten's "The Turn of the Screw," premiered in 1954, is an opera in two acts with a prologue based on the psychological novel by Henry James (1843-1916). Britten heard the work on the radio at the age of 18 and wrote in his diary that it was "wonderful and impressive, but terribly creepy and frightening. He also read the novel the following year and judged it "an incredible masterpiece. Among the characters, the boy Miles plays an important role, and the participation of Leo Jemison, who excels in this role, is noteworthy. The music consists of a vast number of variations on a single theme, and its precision and depth are also appealing, such as the use of the 12-tone technique for the "screw" theme, while symbolizing good and evil in tonality.
