Description:

Romantic Piano Concerto Vol.61! Döller and Dreischok! Hyperion's "Romantic Piano Concerto Series" is a series of discoveries and revivals of unknown piano concertos of the Romantic era. The 61st installment of this series features Theodor Döhler (1814-1856) and Alexander Dryschok (1818-1869), virtuoso pianists and composers of the 19th century who share the common denominator of "Italy"! ■Theodor Döhler, a German musician who was born in Naples, Italy, where his father was a Kapellmeister, made his name as a child prodigy. Döhler, who learned piano from Benedict in Naples and Czerny in Vienna, showed his talent to the fullest. His fame reached its peak during his European concert tours to Italy, Germany, France, and Russia, where he achieved aristocratic status and married a Russian princess, a success story. ■Alexander Dryschok (1818-1869), a Bohemian musician who was invited to become a professor at the Petersburg Conservatory and appointed court pianist in Russia, but was unable to adapt to his environment and died in Italy, where he emigrated. As a pianist, his astonishing technique, especially the overwhelming presence of his left hand, made an impact in many places. His "Concert Pieces," dedicated to the Philharmonic Society of London, are characterized by a style reminiscent of Beethoven. ■The soloists and orchestra for the 61st Collection are the masterful Howard Shelley, the face of the series, and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, a world-class orchestra from the island of Tasmania, Australia. The exquisite combination is still alive and well this time!
