Description:

A live recording of the Viennese sound tradition created by the fusion of a brass ensemble and a world-class organ In April 2019, the brass ensemble "Phil Brecht Wien" presented a wonderful program with Olivier Latry. The program was chosen to further the understanding of the Viennese sound tradition through the fusion of two sound worlds, realized in a special arrangement by Mark Gall. One week after the successful premiere at the "Palace of Culture" in Dresden, a concert in the Great Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna was recorded live. Ratley played the Rieger organ, newly installed in 2011 and considered one of the world's finest pipe organs, while the other 17 musicians created an atmosphere and a beautiful, powerful sound as good as that of a large orchestra. The Philharmonic Vienna is made up of musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, North German Radio Philharmonic, Wiener Volksoper, Tonkünstlerorchester, Hannover State Opera, Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, and others. The orchestra made its impressive debut in 2013 with a brilliant performance in the interval film of the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert. Olivier Latry is organist at Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris, and organist emeritus of the Orchestre National de Montréal.He is currently Artist-in-Residence at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, USA, where he is recognized as one of the finest organists in the world. Anton Mittermeier is a solo timpani player with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic. He currently holds percussion classes at the Vienna Conservatorium and is a senior lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Mark Gall, arranger, is a bass trombonist with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera and a tenor trombonist with the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle. The booklet includes a foreword by Franz Welser-Möst and an essay by Otto Biba on the organ of the Musikverein Vienna. Universal Music/IMS
