Description:
Max Richter's newest endeavor is a beautiful collaboration of sleep and sound! Richter has made new history with his latest work, Sleep. The longest single piece of music ever recorded, he has created music that can be heard - and experienced - while the listener falls asleep. It's a personal lullaby to a turbulent world. It's a personal lullaby to a turbulent world, a declaration of the slow life, so to speak," Richter said. Sleep is a groundbreaking work in every respect, but musically it continues Richter's normative framework--that is, it continues to question what the language of classical music should be. As in all of his previous works--but not all of them--Sleep is centered on piano, strings, keyboards, electronics, and voice, and it straddles the blurred boundaries between various musical genres. Sleep straddles the blurred lines between various musical genres. While one might expect music with a hypnotic effect to be instantly soothing, the reality is quite different. The eight-hour-long "Sleep," which is being released separately in digital version, is intended to be listened to - experienced - from beginning to end, with the listener awakened at the beginning of the song It is intended for listeners to fall asleep at the end of the piece. And the one-hour version of the four forms of "From Sloop," which can be enjoyed while awake, just like a regular record. The purpose of the two pieces is different: the one-hour CD and LP are meant to be "listened to with the ear," while the longer eight-hour version is meant to be "heard naturally" during sleep. I wrote these songs for people to listen to at night, and I hope they actually fall asleep listening to them," says Richter. Universal Music/IMS
