Rachmaninoff, who studied under Arensky at the Moscow Conservatory, completed his first opera, *Aleko*, in 1982 as his graduation project. Based on Pushkin’s “The Gypsies,” “Aleko” was recognized even by Tchaikovsky and earned Rachmaninoff a gold medal—an honor previously bestowed only on Koreshchenko and Taneyev—making it the masterpiece of his youth that launched his career. “Aleko,” which concludes Noseda’s recording of “Rachmaninoff’s Three Great Operas,” is a live recording made in Turin featuring the chorus of the Royal Opera House of Turin—where Noseda has served as music director since 2007—unlike the first two works, which were studio recordings made in Manchester! The lineup is also impeccable, featuring a star-studded cast of soloists currently performing at Russia’s Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theaters.
