Volume 1 of “Polish Choral Works”—Eamon Duggan’s official debut as conductor of The Sixteen—features Bartłomiej Penkiel (fl. 1633–1670)! ■Around 1633, Penkiel served as Marco Scacchi’s assistant choirmaster at the Warsaw Court Chapel, where he was responsible for sacred music. After being promoted to Kapellmeister, he was forced to leave following the Swedish occupation of Warsaw and took up the position of music director at Wawel Cathedral in Kraków. As a composer, he left behind masterpieces of polyphony that carried on the Baroque tradition, and his name is etched in history as one of the leading musicians of 17th-century Poland during the mid-Baroque period. ■Eamon Duggan has played a vital role in establishing the foundation for The Sixteen’s performances by collaborating with soprano Sally Dunkley on historical research and musical analysis. With a rich career as a choral conductor—including stints as Principal Guest Conductor of the UK National Youth Choir and the Wrocław Philharmonic Choir, and as Chorus Director of the Britten Sinfonia Voices—the partnership between Eamon Doogan and The Sixteen is sure to attract significant attention!
