Beethoven (1770-1827)

Description:

WOP's UNESCO-designated concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I Beethoven's Ninth, a symbol of freedom and peace 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. To commemorate the occasion, the World Orchestra for Peace (WOP) performed UNESCO-designated concerts at two iconic locations. The WOP was founded in 1995 by Georg Solti, who was inspired to form the orchestra by a concert held in 1992 by Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, to commemorate Solti's 80th birthday. The concert was held to commemorate Scholty's 80th birthday in 1992, hosted by Prince Charles and Princess Diana. In 2010, he was appointed as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Music. This video features a performance that took place in Künzelsau, Germany, on November 11, 2018, 100 years after the end of the war in 1918. The performance featured Beethoven's Ninth, which is performed around the world as a symbol of freedom and peace. The soloists were Erin Wall, Annika Schlicht, Attilio Grassere, and Renée Parpe, all of whom are excellent singers. The orchestra was a joint effort of the World Orchestra for Peace and the local Würth (Würth) Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Donald Runnicles. Bonus footage includes interviews about the concert by Reinhold Würth, chairman of the Würth Group, a German global corporation and art collector with a deep formative interest in the arts, Charles Kay, a member of the orchestra's board of directors, and Scholte's widow.
