French music making in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was characterized by a preference for sophisticated melodies and unusual tonal combinations. The influence of composers such as Debussy and Ravel runs deep into the second half, but the avant-garde experimentation found in the rarefied atmosphere and rhythmic fluidity of Satie's "furniture music" was also an undeniable element of the French soundscape at the end of the century. In this context, the flute and harp duo played an important leading role, and although this mixture of tones was already popular in the early 19th century among German composers from Mozart onward, its best architects were the French composers of the late 19th century. This album includes important sonatas by Jean-Michel Dammers, a pupil of Alfred Cortot and Marcel Dupré, Divertissement by Jules Mouquet, a pupil of Théodore Dubois, and the Double Suite by Jean Clas, a diverse figure who lived during the 19th and 20th centuries!
