This new album by Arte dei Suonatori, a Polish period instrument ensemble founded in 1993, features works by Italian composers Hasse, Perotti, and Trelli—all contemporaries of Vivaldi. Titled “A Venetian Christmas,” this album brings together a collection of dazzling works and features an intriguing selection that includes pieces performed on the psaltery, a plucked string instrument. The psaltery, played by plucking the strings with the fingers or a raven’s feather, was primarily popular from the 14th to the 15th centuries, and was played in various ways—placed on a desk or lap, or suspended from the neck by a cord.
