Handel’s Sonata Collection Performed by López-Banso & Al Aire Español Op. 5, consisting of seven sonatas in all, is rich in individual character, resembling an opera without words. While Op. 2, composed earlier, followed the structure of Corelli’s church sonatas (slow–fast–slow –fast) structure), but Op. 5 consists entirely of five-movement sonatas, with some even extending to six movements. The final movement of each is a dance, making this collection more of a suite than a traditional set of sonatas. Although all the material is taken from Handel’s existing works, this collection of sonatas allows us to once again appreciate Handel’s intellect and sensibility in the way he arranges them. The ensemble performance by the members of Al Aire Español is fresh and elegant. Banso’s masterful harpsichord playing brings the whole piece together beautifully. King International
