This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of "Stop Making Sens," a legendary music film and top-notch live entertainment film that compiles the band's high-impact stage performances into a film with director Jonathan Demme, and the film's soundtrack was also released this year. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the release of the film's soundtrack. To celebrate this anniversary year, the soundtrack is now available in a deluxe edition containing all 18 songs from the film! Prior to the 40th anniversary of the film's release this year, a 2-CD analog edition was released last summer as a complete version of the soundtrack, including two songs that were not included in the soundtrack at the time, and was immediately sold out worldwide. The original soundtrack, released in 1984, contained nine songs, and a special new edition of 16 songs was released in 1999, which included additional songs from the film. The deluxe edition released this time contains 18 songs in total, including "Cities" and "Big Business / I Zimbra," two songs that were used in the movie but were not included in the soundtrack. The complete version of this masterpiece has been revived in the modern age.The 2CD+Blu-ray edition also includes a re-sized version of the 28-page booklet that was included in the 2-CD analog edition released last year, which features liner notes by four members, Tina Weymouth, David Byrne, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison, as well as rare photos from that time. He then proposed to Talking Heads that they make a concert film of this performance, and the band members agreed to the idea, spending several months working out the details. They filmed three performances at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood in December 1983, and completed STOP MAKING SENSE. Talking Heads performed 18 songs on STOP MAKING SENSE, including "Burning Down the House," the band's first Top 10 single in the U.S., which was their latest single at the time and was in heavy rotation on radio and MTV in the U.S. that summer. The film is a classic. However, it was not this Top 10 U.S. hit that became widely regarded as the best scene of the film, but the performance of the song "Girlfriend Is Better" from the album "SPEAKING IN TONGUES" that was also included in the film.He performed this song in the oversized business suit that is now known as David Byrne's iconic outfit. (Incidentally, the oversized suit was inspired by a "Noh" costume he had seen during a previous visit to Japan.) The concert film consists of songs that cover all six studio albums they had released up to that point. David Byrne appears alone on stage with a drum machine to perform "Pshyco Killer" at the opening of the concert, and after each song, the band members appear on stage, followed by the touring members, and the evolution of the band as they add new members is presented in a single show. For me, STOP MAKING SENSE is still relevant today, because the production and lighting techniques could have been created at an earlier stage. For example, the lighting system (varilight) used in concert halls and on stages today, which is motorized to follow the object being illuminated, has become the mainstream. If we had used that lighting system, it would have been documented in the film and perhaps given the impression that it is now outdated. I think the harmony of the elegant, unfading lighting, without any interviews, has created a film that people want to watch over and over again. David Byrne said the album is an interesting piece of work, commenting that for many, it is an introduction to Talking Heads. He said, "We've released live albums before this one, but with the film on it, along with the great quality mix and sound quality, we've found a whole new audience because of this album. As is often the case, the songs have a much stronger energy when performed live and in front of a live audience. In many ways, this edition is more exciting than a regular studio recording, so I think a lot of listeners will get to know Talking Heads through this album. Chris Frantz recalled the most joyful experience that "STOP MAKING SENSE" has brought him. Since itsrelease, purists have found Stop MakingSense slickly mixedand, worse yet, incomprehensive. The nine tracks included jumble and truncate the natural progression of frontman DavidByrne's meticulously arranged stage show. Cries for a double-album treatment --a la 1982's live opus The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads -- were sounded almost immediately; more enterprising fansmerely dubbed the VHS release of the film onto cassette tape. So, until a 1999 "special edition" cured the 1984 release's ills, fans had tomake do with the Stop Making Sense theywere given -- whichis, by any account, an exemplary snapshot of a band at the height of its powers. Even with some of his more memorable tics edited out, Byrne is in fine voice here: Never before had he sounded warmer or more approachable, as evidenced by his soaring rendition of "Once in a Lifetime." Though almost half the album focuses on Speaking in Tongues material, the band makes room for one of Byrne's Catherine Wheel tunes (the hard-driving, elliptical "What a Day That Was") as well as up-tempo versions of "Pyscho Killer" and "Take Me to the River." If anything, Stop Making Sense's emphasis on keyboards and rhythm is its greatest asset as well as its biggest failing: Knob-tweakers Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison play up their parts at the expense of the treblier aspects of the performance, and fans would have to wait almost 15 years for reparations.
