While composers such as Vidor, Guilmant, Langlais, and Dupre are well-known, Louis Vierne (1870–1937) is also renowned for his rich, symphonic style. This recording features Vierne’s “24 Pieces in Free Style,” a collection that offers an accessible introduction to his work. ◆In this recording, the focus is on faithfully adhering to the composer’s specified registrations (combinations of tones), while expressing the diverse character of the works through flexible tempo choices and the pursuit of three-dimensional, dynamic phrasing. 【Track Listing】 ◆Vierne: “24 Pieces in Free Style,” Op. 31. Composed in 1913 and published in 1914 by Durand in Paris. The work is divided into two volumes: Volume 1 (Nos. 1–12) and Volume 2 (Nos. 13–24). Volume 2 includes the “Funeral March,” which lasts over 10 minutes. In addition to influences from César Franck, Charles-Marie Widor, and the Impressionists, the pieces are characterized by delicate chromatic techniques. [Performer] ◆Carlo Mazzone: Born in Milan in 1972, he sang in the Milan Cathedral choir from childhood. He studied musicology at the University of Pavia, Cremona Campus, graduating with top honors, and earned a diploma in organ and organ composition from the Piacenza Conservatory. He also received specialized training in harpsichord and Renaissance polyphony and currently serves as the principal organist at the Church of Santa Rita in Milan.
