Description:
A collection of piano works by Ján Cíker (1911–1989), one of Slovakia’s leading composers of the 20th century. He first received his musical training from his mother and later studied under the composer Figusch-Bistri. At the Prague Conservatory, he studied composition with Jaroslav Kuščík, while also studying conducting and organ; in graduate school, he further honed his skills under Vítězslav Novák. From 1937, he studied under Felix Weingartner in Vienna for one year; thereafter, while teaching at the Bratislava Conservatory, he worked as an opera advisor at the Slovak National Theater. However, he lost his job following the political upheaval of 1948 and subsequently taught composition at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava. His legacy includes nine operas, as well as symphonic poems and orchestral works; he also composed a small number of piano pieces, which, while known within Slovakia, are rarely heard elsewhere. These works, like those of Szymanowski and Janáček, are strongly influenced by folk music, yet they combine resolute determination with mysterious beauty, occasionally evoking the sound of French Impressionism.
