Description:

A masterpiece of silent cinema and a milestone in horror cinema, "Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie des Grauens" (The Vampire Nosferatu), F.W. Murnau's adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic "Vampire Dracula," was first shown in 1922. Exactly 100 years later, in 2023, it was shown for the first time. Exactly 100 years later, in February 2023, "Nosferatu the Vampire" was revived in Zurich with a new 90-minute score by American film composer Christopher Young. The soundtrack is now available on CD and analog. Christopher Young has composed music for many mainstream Hollywood feature films, most notably associated with horror films and the work of directors such as Guillermo del Toro, Sam Raimi, and Clive Barker. His score for "Nosferatu the Vampire" was premiered by the world-renowned Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra and conductor Frank Strobel. Strobel is the artistic director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Europa and was instrumental in the revival of Fritz Lang's 1927 silent epic "Metropolis," which premiered in Berlin in 2010. Young's score for Nosferatu includes an important part for organ, performed by Japanese-born keyboardist Saya Hasino in the score's premiere and in the recording included here. Film music expert John Burlingame has this to say about "Nosferatu the Vampire" and Christopher Young's score: "The score is a very important part of the film. Roughly based on Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula, Vampire Nosferatu was one of the earliest cinematic depictions of the vampire legend, regularly revived and widely revered for its innovative set design, cinematography, and sense of foreboding that captivated audiences then and now. The film is still widely revered for its innovative set design, cinematography, and sense of foreboding that captivated audiences then and now. The original Murnau screening was accompanied by a live score composed by Hans Erdmann, but over the years much of that music has been lost. Dozens of other scores were written for the film, most notably by the British composer James Bernard of Hammer Films fame. However, it was the composition of a new score by Christopher Young and its world premiere in February 2023 by Frank Strobel and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra that caught the attention of fans worldwide. No contemporary composer is better suited for this task than Young. The credits of this widely acclaimed and classically trained American artist include many memorable genre films and a number of outstanding mainstream films. His dramatic intuition and ability to translate it into compelling musical soundscapes is unquestionable. The subtitle of Vampire Nosferatu is "A Symphony of Terror," and Young set out to achieve just that. He evoked the film's silent-era origins by making the pipe organ the central instrument and surrounding it with a large symphony orchestra. Magnificent", "powerful", "breathtaking", "dramatic", "visceral, piercing, and utterly terrifying" are just a few of the accolades the composer received after the premiere. Christopher Young has indeed succeeded in creating a symphony of horror for Nosferatu the Vampire." [Performer Organ: Saya Hashino Orchestra: Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich Conductor: Frank Strobel
