Bolt & the VPO’s Mahler recordings are rare DECCA recordings with Flagstart. Also included are two Wagner works conducted by Metter. Newly remastered from the original master tapes. It is no exaggeration to say that these two Mahler works by Flagstad, alongside *Das Lied von der Erde* with Ferrié and Walter, rank among the finest Mahler recordings on the DECCA label. This recording is also known as a rare example of Bolt conducting the Vienna Philharmonic for DECCA, and the performance has been highly regarded since its initial release. The DECCA recordings from that era beautifully capture Flagstad’s deep, composed voice, Bolt’s dignified and compassionate conducting, and the warm tone of the Vienna Philharmonic. Although made in the early days of stereo recording, the quality of this DECCA recording was exceptional, and it has lost none of its luster even when listened to today. While these recordings have been reissued since the early days of the CD, it is believed that they have rarely been remastered. For this reissue, we went back to the original master tapes in Germany, digitized them using the latest technology at 192 kHz/24-bit, and remastered them to create the CD master. This product represents a reissue of DECCA’s original, superb recording, further enhanced using the latest modern technology. The tangible quality of Flagg’s voice has been brought back to life, and the smooth string section, the distinctive Viennese wind instruments with their rich texture, and the soundstage imbued with the atmosphere of the Sofienzaal are simply magnificent. The album also includes two Wagner works conducted by Meeter. These two works were recorded following the Bruckner recordings—the Vienna Philharmonic’s first recordings for the DECCA label—and were released in 1967 alongside the simultaneously recorded Liszt: Preludes and two other Wagner works (the other two Wagner works are being released simultaneously with this release as PROC1982). The cover features the original design from the LP’s initial release. The booklet also includes some of the other cover designs in color. Additionally, the liner notes feature a newly written introductory essay. For this reissue series, we are releasing all five titles as the first installment.
