Through vivid scenes presented alongside silent characters—who serve as alter egos of the pair’s past selves—the brilliance of their past is brought back to life with even greater clarity. This superb production masterfully captures the delicate and intimate character of the original opera, for which Tchaikovsky entrusted the premiere to students at the Moscow Conservatory. Furthermore, the performance was made truly magnificent by the unparalleled cast, including Keenlyside and Stoyanova. Performances by Elena Maximova as Olga and Pavol Breslik as Lensky also add brilliance to the production. Another highlight is the beautiful music that Robin Ticciati weaves as if to pluck at the very folds of the heart. I am in awe of Ticciati’s artistry!
