The album includes three of his best-known works, including his signature piece, City Noir. The opening piece, "City Noir," is what he calls "imaginary film music" inspired by the cultural and social history of Los Angeles in the 1940s and 1950s. The piece shows Adams' ability to manipulate a huge orchestra in all directions. Fearful Symmetries" was composed during the period of his successful "Nixon in China. It is a minimalist piece with a variety of instruments, including synthesizers, saxophones, etc., added to the orchestration, and it is a variant of a big band, so to speak. Conductor Marin Allsop has been working with Adams for more than 30 years, since he started working with the Cabrillo Contemporary Music Festival, and has performed many of his works during that time. This time, she performs her beloved Adams' works with her own hand-picked orchestra, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the music is full of empathy. Laura Montes Dances the Spider Dance," placed at the end of the album, was written by Adams for her when Orsop left the Cabrillo Contemporary Music Festival, and is a short but warm-hearted and humorous piece.
