The composer Quayle has been thinking for a long time about what he could do in the string quartet format. The question was of considerable importance to him, and he felt that reflecting the composer's inner voice while respecting the intimacy of the players and their individual nuances would be a solution to the problem. The album includes three pieces that show the evolution of Quayle's style: the nostalgic No. 1, which he worked on in his mid-20s; the experimental and sensual No. 2; and the No. 3, composed in 13 short movements at the age of 40 and containing quotations from a wide variety of works.
