Brahms, a native of Hamburg in northern Germany, and Mandychevsky, who grew up in the multilingual environment of the Bukovina region—then part of the Austrian Empire and now spanning Ukraine and Romania—met in Vienna in the late 1870s and formed a deep friendship. While Mandychevsky is best known today as a musicologist and editor, this album features 12 of the 18 songs from his *Romanian Songs*—including world premiere recordings—performed in the original Romanian, allowing listeners to rediscover his talent as a composer. Mandichevski’s works, which reflect a deep love for folk songs and the spirit of Schubert—whom both men revered—are beautiful pieces that resonate with many of Brahms’s masterpieces.
