Description:

Heifetz made his U.S. debut at Carnegie Hall in 1917 and became a U.S. citizen in 1925. Heifetz, who made his U.S. debut at Carnegie Hall in 1917, became a U.S. citizen in 1925. Heifetz was based on the East Coast, but built a studio home in Beverly Hills in 1940 and moved to Los Angeles after World War II. This disc reissues the RCA recordings he made with the L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra in 1953-1954, conducted by Wallenstein. Korngold's Violin Concerto was premiered by Heifetz in 1947 and performed repeatedly thereafter. The composer said of the piece, "The last movement is the one that requires a high degree of technical skill, but there are so many beautiful melodies and lyrical episodes that it is more suited to Caruso than to Paganini. How nice to have someone who is both Caruso and Paganini, namely Heifetz, play it for us. The recording was very well received and contributed greatly to the popularization of the work.In 2008, Heifetz was finally inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (the third violin concerto recording to be inducted, after Kreisler's Mendelssohn and Menuhin's Elgar). Heifetz's overwhelming technical brilliance has attracted much attention, but as Korngold likened him to Caruso, Heifetz also sings melodious melodies with a rich sense of songfulness that is at times plaintive and at other times sweet. The three movements of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Violin Concerto No. 2, which Heifetz premiered with the New York Philharmonic under Toscanini, are named for three Old Testament prophets. Inspired by the works of Sinding, who was himself a violinist, and by violin virtuosos, the three pieces also showcase Heifetz's mastery of the slow and the fast, as well as his singing. Naxos Japan
