The young ensemble, led by the brilliant Justin Taylor, has been playing the Dandrieu and Corelli sonatas for more than a decade now. The question they deliberately put at the beginning of the liner notes is surely conveyed when you actually listen to this disc. The latest recording by Justin Taylor, a gifted old-time keyboardist who is quickly catching the world's attention, is a collection of late Baroque masterpieces that grew out of Corelli's popularity in France, recorded with Le Consort. The works, so fascinating that they directly inspired the founding of the ensemble, are recorded alongside masterpieces by Corelli, who was also the source of their inspiration. Dandrieu is best known for the clavesan (harpsichord) pieces he published after becoming royal organist during the reign of Louis XV in the 1720s, but this collection is from long before that, during the reign of Louis XIV.
