■Supervised and curated by Toru Hashimoto (SUBURBIA), with artwork by Jiro Fujita (FJD) and mastering by Calm, this 7-inch single features 12 top-tier artists performing new covers of Ghibli songs under the theme of “the happiness of afternoon coffee.” A 7-inch single cut from the newly recorded Ghibli song cover compilation Café l’Après-midi Meets Studio Ghibli! ■Side A: TAMTAM / No Woman, No Cry Gaining attention not only in Japan but also from music listeners around the world as a Tokyo-based reggae/dub band—with releases on overseas labels, promotion on the BBC and NTS Radio, and appearances on Bandcamp and Mr. Bongo’s year-end best-of lists—the Ghibli song by the globally acclaimed four-piece band TAMTAM is a cover of “No Woman, No Cry”—the Bob Marley classic sung by Tina—which was featured in the 2002 short film Ghiblies Episode 2 directed by Yoshiyuki Momose. Amid a dreamlike soundscape entirely processed with dub effects, the soothing resonance of the steel pan and that universally beloved melody race through the track. This beautiful phantom blends seamlessly with the rhythm provided by the deep bass and drums, resulting in a breathtaking sound production that exudes a dazzling sense of joy—it is simply exquisite. Among the countless covers of this song, this stands out as a truly one-of-a-kind masterpiece. ■Side AA: Nobuyuki Nakajima / Summer of Goodbye A Ghibli song by Nobuyuki Nakajima—a musician and pianist of rare talent who has composed music for numerous Japanese films, TV dramas, anime, and commercials, and who, following his encounter with Jane Birkin, is now based in Paris and active as a music director for orchestral performances and productions around the world—is a cover of “Sayonara no Natsu” by Aoi Teshima, the theme song from the 2011 film From Up on Poppy Hill, directed by Goro Miyazaki. In this recording, he has deliberately chosen to perform the original composition—with its poignant melody and tense orchestral arrangement by Koichi Sakata—as a piano solo, reconstructing it at a slower tempo than the original. His touch, simple yet as if imbuing every single note with meaning, evokes a sense of mysterious tenderness amidst the tension. This solitary and melancholic soundscape—which deeply immerses the listener and seems to bring the performer’s image to life—is a sublime, elegant gift from a masterful pianist.
