There are many pianists who market themselves as “unique,” but becoming a truly unique artist requires a very long journey. Not only must one master technique, but one must also fully develop one’s interpretation of the music, handling of dynamics, and devotion to the work—and only after fulfilling all these requirements to the fullest can one refine the piece and present it to the world. Of course, meticulous attention to the album’s track selection is also essential. One pianist who meets all these criteria is Zimon Bart. Whether he plays the opening of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto at a painfully slow tempo or performs Ravel’s “Gaspard de la Nuit” in a deliberately unsettling manner, his style is truly unique. Naturally, this two-disc set is also a veritable feast of “originality.” Though it’s a collection themed around Paganini, it features a lineup of truly diabolical music. First, let’s start with the familiar “La Campanella.” Lutosławski sounds cooler than you’d imagine (surprise!), and then there’s Rachmaninoff, with Eschenbach’s conducting adding even more fuel to that demonic intensity. If you listen to the whole thing in one sitting, you might find yourself plagued by nightmares that night. Naxos Japan
