Description:

Naoya Otsuka's Mean Law, Vol. 2 is now available, following the highly acclaimed Mean Law Clavier, Vol. 1 (WAONCD 380), which offers unlimited possibilities drawn from a single positif organ. The strict counterpoint by Bach, especially the more complex fugues that characterize Volume 2, are not only unraveled and developed beautifully, but also the possibilities of this instrument are brought out beautifully, with a variety of tones and expressions appearing one after another, so much so that it is hard to believe that this is a single Positif organ. In the liner notes written by Otsuka himself, he describes the second volume and his various attempts at his own series at the Saitama Theatre in Saitama, Japan, which are very interesting. ~Since there is no title page in Bach's own handwriting, we do not know definitively which keyboard instrument he intended to play the "Volume 2" on. However, considering that it is a collection in the same style as "Volume 1," it seems safe to assume that it could be played on any clavier of the time (harpsichord, clavichord, and, depending on the context, organ or the newly born pianoforte, etc.).While "Volume 1" can be played on harpsichord, organ, or clavichord in its own way, I have secretly thought that "Volume 2" is outstandingly beautiful when played on harpsichord. Recently, more and more people have come to believe that a new "pianoforte" sound can be heard in "Vol. 2," and I thought they had a point. However, by daring to play it on the organ this time, I realized that there were many things embedded in it that I had not yet heard. I am looking forward to the possibility that listeners may hear something different from what they are used to hearing. (Naoya Otsuka Profile: Born in Tokyo.
