Two great Mozart pieces by a virtuoso discovered by Karajan. This is the first SACD release in high-resolution format using ORT mastering. Meyer on clarinet and Schellenberger on oboe, who are still among the world's best players, gave a masterful performance that has made their reputation. The ensemble with the members of the Berlin Philharmonic is also a must-hear. This is the first SACD release with high-resolution recording using ORT mastering technology originally developed by Nippon Columbia. The CD layer also uses this mastered sound source. The recording of this album by Zabine Meyer falls right around the time of her audition for the position of principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1981, when she was provisionally inducted into the orchestra on Karajan's recommendation. The young player suddenly attracted a lot of attention in Japan because of the friction with the orchestra at that time, especially Karajan's deteriorating relationship with the Berlin Philharmonic after this incident, which was reported in music magazines (after all, the provisional appointment was rejected by the consensus of the orchestra members in the fall of 1982 after this recording was made).Although the details of how Nippon Columbia recorded her at that time are unknown, this recording is one of the unforgettable albums in terms of collaboration with one of the chamber groups of the Berlin Philharmonic, with which Nippon Columbia had a delicate relationship at that time. The viola player is Kunio Tsuchiya, who passed away on August 20, 2023. The performance itself has been highly acclaimed since its release, not only for the authentic Mozart, which shows off the characteristics of her full yet solid German-style clarinet, but also for the rare Küchner "Introduction, Theme, and Variations". The Mozart has been re-recorded later, but the performance here is remarkable for its large instrumentation. This time, two pieces from Schellenberger's Mozart album with the Philharmonia Quartet Berlin, also recorded the previous year, have been selected and included as couplings. Schellenberger is about 10 years older than Meyer, but he officially became the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1980, just the year before this recording was made. At that time, together with Lothar Koch, he supported the Berlin Philharmonic during the final years of the Karajan era.
