Akira Ifukube’s Long-Lost Composition Finally Released! The First-Ever Live Recording of “Arctic Forest” in Japan! All tracks—including a major work by Shiro Fukai, who is currently undergoing a revival—are being released on CD for the first time! August 8, 2010, was a long-awaited day for Ifukube fans. The Japanese premiere of Akira Ifukube’s “Polar Forest”—long considered a “lost work”—finally took place! This piece was commissioned by the State of Manchukuo in 1944 and premiered in Manchuria in 1945. For a long time, the only existing score was in Beijing, making performances impossible; however, in 2007, another autograph score was discovered at the composer’s home, leading to this Japanese premiere. As a representative work from Akira Ifukube’s early career, it will surely remain an important historical document for years to come. Composed around themes characteristic of Ifukube, this piece is a must-listen for fans. The album also includes “Prayer for Peace,” which Shiro Fukai composed for the largest ensemble of his career. Premiered in 1949, this work is filled with intense indignation toward war and profound emotion. Reminiscent of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Mahler’s grand works, the fugue for chorus and orchestra in the final movement is truly spectacular. The lyrics were written by Atsuo Oki, the author of “Ode to the Earth.” This is the first-ever CD release of the complete work, which holds significant historical value in the history of Japanese music!
