Description:

Matzal & the Czech Philharmonic / Mahler: “Tragic” (SACD) Matzal and the Czech Philharmonic’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, “Tragic,” is back as a 2-disc SACD hybrid set! The Mahler series by Maazel and the Czech Philharmonic first received rave reviews for Symphony No. 5 (OVCL00154), recorded at the concert marking Maazel’s appointment as music director of the Czech Philharmonic. The second release in the series, Symphony No. 3 (OVCL00219)—which won the Grand Prize at the 2005 Record Academy Awards—has also received exceptionally high acclaim. This long-awaited third installment features Symphony No. 6, “Tragic.” For Maazel, who is known for his refined musical craftsmanship, this is an unusually powerful performance; the raw, intense expression in the final movement—which disregards minor imperfections—is particularly startling. The Czech Philharmonic’s string section, usually known for its velvety lustre, sounds exceptionally sharp here; the incisiveness of the violins and the gritty power of the lower strings are simply breathtaking. The brass section’s intensity is also staggering; the metal percussion and piccolo are vivid, and even the harp asserts itself eloquently, presenting an overwhelming force that goes far beyond the Czech Philharmonic’s usual ensemble-oriented sound. The excellent, realistic, and vivid recording is another major highlight. The hammering in the final movement—a prominent feature of this work—is also intense. The first instance in particular (Track 2 on Disc 2, around 12 minutes and 46 seconds) produces a truly spectacular sound. ・Mahler: Symphony No. 6 in A minor, “Tragic” Czech Philharmonic Orchestra Zdeněk Máczal (conductor) Recording dates: May 4–5, 2006 Recording location: Dvořák Hall, “House of Artists,” Prague DSD Recording SACD Hybrid Stereo/Multichannel
