The highlight, without a doubt, is the footage of the world premiere of “Romantic Offering,” a new double concerto for piano and cello by Shchedrin, a leading figure in contemporary Russian music. With this work, Shchedrin returns to the traditions of Western classical music, composing his first-ever double concerto for piano and cello. The title “Romantic Offering” is influenced by Bach’s “Musical Offering.” The work consists of three movements, and Shchedrin uses his own compositional techniques to bring to life the meanings of “love,” “infinity,” and “desire” contained within the word “Romantic.” The bonus footage, which captures the behind-the-scenes story leading up to the world premiere, features scenes of Shchedrin, Argerich, and Maisky discussing the work, as well as Shchedrin observing the rehearsals. It also includes footage of him strolling along the tree-lined streets of Lucerne with his wife, Maya Plisetskaya, one of the greatest ballerinas of our time. In addition to Shchedrin’s work, this concert recording features major works of the late Romantic period by Franck and Dvořák, as well as Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, conducted by Neeme Järvi and performed by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.
