We are releasing the double LP "Dalbergia Retusa," featuring Hans Reichel's solo guitar music edited by Oren Ambarchi. Though perhaps less well-known than Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, or Keith Rowe, his rethinking of the instrument was in some ways the most radical. Early on, he abandoned the conventional guitar, creating his own series of instruments featuring additional strings, fingerboards, movable pickups, extra bridges, special capos, and other innovations documented in the extensive booklet accompanying this release. Reichel lived for many years in the small West German city of Wuppertal. Wuppertal unexpectedly became a center of European free jazz in the late 1960s, also being the home of Peter Brötzmann and Peter Kowald. His solo debut, Wichlinghauser Blues, appeared early in the FMP discography, marking the beginning of a relationship with the label that lasted into the 1990s. The shimmering timbres and unconventional pitch relationships made possible by his invented instruments are idiosyncratic, yet also deeply lyrical and romantic in their harmonic content.Riche's formative influences, growing up in West Germany in the 1960s, were primarily British and American rock bands, and this background is evident in many of the songs included here. For example, "An Old Friend Passes By" is haunted by the ghost of Hendrick's rhythm guitar, and the wild finale is selected from a rare 7-inch single from 1975, the only song on which overdubbing was used. Reichel was an important source for the development of Oren Ambalki's unique approach to expanding the electric guitar. Fittingly, his selection of songs begins with the first song Reichar ever heard. It was included on a flexi-disc that came with the 1989 issue of Guitar Player magazine. Reichar has performed extensively with others in many venues, playing the violin and the daxophone, another important instrument he invented, but his music for solo guitar remains at the core of his oeuvre.
