Barthold Kuiken Pits Haydn Against Bach! Barthold Kuiken has long said that the works of Haydn and C.P.E. Bach are the finest compositions ever written for the flute. Bartold has decided to present the flute works of these two composers, composed at about the same time but in different styles, on one album: the three works by C.P.E. Bach were composed in Hamburg in 1788, and Haydn's three trios were composed in Vienna/Esterházy between 1789-90. composed in Esterházy in 1789-90. Mozart's famous Flute Quartet K285 was also composed in 1777, and C.P.E. Bach wrote his Flute Quartet during his last masterpiece period and the year of his death. Haydn, on the other hand, began his creative freedom after the death of his greatest friend, the Marquis Nikolaus of Esterházy. They were both at a turning point in their lives as well. C.P.E. Bach seemed to run through the era with his gale-force emotional expression on the flute, which was positioned as an elegant instrument at the time.
