Volume 170 of the series features "Fidelio," Beethoven's only opera, performed by master conductor Karl Böhm with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. In his long musical career, Böhm was involved in many performances of "Fidelio" and made many recordings of it. This album is a reissue of a recording made in 1955, when he was the music director of the Vienna State Opera at the time. The singers include Marta Mehdl, who was called one of the three greatest Wagner prima donnas of the postwar period; Anton Delmota, a renowned Lieder and oratorio singer who specialized in Mozart operas; and the great baritone Paul Schaeffler, who was invited to major festivals such as Salzburg and Bayreuth, as well as Covent Garden, the Metropolitan, and La Scala, and who gained fame and acclaim at the world's major opera houses.
