Shaghaeg Nosrati, the brilliant German pianist praised by András Schiff. Following her critically acclaimed previous release, *Concertos*, here is the long-awaited second installment of her Alkan project! She has finally recorded *Grand Sonata* and *Symphony*, ambitious works by this maverick of the Romantic era! Volume 2 of the piano works of Charles-Valentin Alkan, performed by Iranian-German pianist Shaghaeg Nosrati. Her 2019 release “Alkan: Concerto for Solo Piano” (8553104), an early major work for her on the C’Avi label, was was met with critical acclaim across the board, with reviews such as: “A performance that emphasizes lyricism over virtuosity. The masterful depiction of the intricate texture is superb” (U.S. Fanfare magazine) and “A true musician with formidable technique who is far more than just a virtuoso” (U.K. Gramophone magazine). This new release is positioned as the full-fledged sequel to the Alkan project, building on that success. Although Alkan was active in Paris during the same era as Chopin and Liszt, he left behind works characterized by his own unique, complex techniques and distinctive compositional sensibility. The *Symphony for Solo Piano*, which Nosrati himself describes as “the best introduction to the world of Alkan,” was written—like the previous *Concerto*—as part of the *12 Études in All the Minor Keys* (Nos. 4–7). Furthermore, the “Grand Sonata ‘The Four Ages’,” which depicts the evolution of the human spirit from one’s twenties to one’s fifties across four movements, adopts an extremely experimental and innovative approach while building upon the tradition of the Viennese Classical sonata. The album concludes with the “Barcarolle,” which demonstrates Alkan’s exceptional skill in writing short pieces. Born in Bochum, Germany, in 1989, Nosrati established her international reputation after winning a prize at the International Bach Competition in Leipzig. Her lucid interpretations have been highly praised by the master András Schiff, and she currently serves as his assistant at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin. Although she has established her reputation through performances of J.S. Bach, she has actually been captivated by Alkan’s music for 20 years and has continued to study it. “His piano music often evokes orchestral timbres,” she says. “And like Beethoven, I feel a spiritual connection in the way extreme characters clash and challenge the limits of the instrument and performance.” You are invited to enjoy a program filled with deep insight and passion, the culmination of her many years of exploration and performance experience.
