Music truly moves us only when heard in a live performance. I doubt anyone would dispute this. However, I wonder if it is right for recordings to be neglected simply because of this. In the past, many musicians had no interest in recordings, and there are still some who feel that way today. Tsujii himself was one of them. However, it seems that his encounter with Dr. Isoda opened his eyes to the possibilities of recording. Dr. Isoda’s theory held that if a recording can capture music exactly as it is, it can convey an emotional impact equal to—or at times even greater than—that of a live performance, and we have indeed experienced this firsthand. Since then, I have continued at a pace of one solo work per year up to the present day. Mr. Tsujii’s purpose in recording—just as in live performance—was to convey the emotional impact of music, and this has remained consistent throughout. Today, thanks to advances in computer technology, it has become possible to create recordings that appear more perfect by selecting the best parts from each take, but Mr. Tsujii shows only minimal interest in this approach. Rather, his recording method—which emphasizes the flow of the music by having him play through the program several times in the style of a live performance during the recording sessions—remains unchanged. What surprises me every time is that, even though this series of violin miniatures has continued for so many installments—and one might expect it to have become formulaic by now—both Mr. Tsujii and Mr. Fujii, the pianist who has accompanied him since the very beginning, continue to evolve with each recording. Furthermore, as the series progresses, the number of well-known pieces naturally decreases, and the number of lesser-known gems increases; yet these pieces sound all the more captivating and instantly evoke a sense of familiarity the moment you hear them. In recent years, Mr. Matsuda—who shares this same approach to recording—has joined us as a formidable engineer. Given this development, I’m sure I’m not the only one hoping that Mr. Tsujii will continue recording these collections of short pieces for many years to come, continuing to showcase not only the famous pieces but also the charm of those hidden gems buried in history.
