Description:

A collection of concertos by a talented star of the mandolin world who expresses his passion for this instrument. With the recording of Vivaldi's concerto with Il Giardino armonico & Giovanni Antonini, Avital fulfilled a long-time dream. This is the way I wanted to make music!" . This was Avital's impression when he first saw them play live in Jerusalem. Now world-renowned for his charisma and passionate playing, the mandolinist is delighted to have worked with this exciting old instrument ensemble and its conductor and founder, Antonini, on this latest album. Together they perform original concertos for mandolin by Barbera, Paisiello and Hummel, as well as Avital's own arrangements of concertos by Bach and Vivaldi. In the Bach piece, Antonini also participates as soloist on the recorder. Avital plays all four parts by himself, using the latest technology, in Vivaldi's concerto RV580, originally written for four violins. He has long had a clear vision in his mind of how he wanted to play this work. In this wonderful performance, he used four different mandolins (and two mandolas), allowing each part to have a different color and character. I am very proud of the result. We feel we were able to create a live performance atmosphere where the soloists were able to communicate with each other," says Avital. Avital's arrangement of Bach's Violin and Oboe Concerto BWV 1060R is a "lighter, brighter" mandolin and recorder version. The inclusion of this work is part of his "lifelong mission" to record as much of Bach's music as possible to expand his DG Bach discography. Two of the three original works for mandolin on this recording originate from Naples, the city associated with the sound of the mandolin. The culture of Naples is full of color, emotion, and dramatic elements, and these characteristics are reflected in the E-flat major concerto attributed to Paisiello. Another composer, Barbera, also from Naples and 20 years older than Paisiello, composed vivid, picturesque music, including incidental music for the theater arts. Thanks to Avital, the mandolin has once again returned to the center of classical music, and his tireless efforts to revive forgotten works, adapt works written for other instruments, and commission new music from today's leading composers have revitalized and expanded the mandolin repertoire. Avital is a member of the Classical Academy of Music. Avital was the first mandolin soloist to be nominated for a classical Grammy Award. Universal Music/IMS
