To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Wattstax, held at the LA Memorial Coliseum on August 20, 1972, Stax Records is releasing the most comprehensive collection of audio recordings from the event in a variety of formats, across multiple price points and with different content! Wattstax was a benefit concert organized by Stax Records in conjunction with the Watts Summer Festival to mark the seventh anniversary of the 1965 Watts Riots in Los Angeles. Held on August 20, 1972, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the concert drew an audience of over 100,000 people and featured a seven-hour mix of soul, funk, and gospel music. In addition to performances by Stax heavyweights such as Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, Johnny Taylor, and the Bar-Kays, among other major Stax artists. Reverend Jesse Jackson also participated in the event, serving as the emcee and opening the show with his oft-cited “I Am Somebody” speech. A two-LP soundtrack capturing the highlights of the concert was released a few months later and sold over 500,000 copies within just a few weeks of its release. In 1973, the concert film *Wattstax*, directed by Mel Stuart and hosted by Richard Pryor, was released and went on to be nominated for Best Documentary at the 1974 Golden Globe Awards. In 2020, it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” (Note: The National Film Registry entry for this film, as maintained by the Library of Congress, also includes an essay by Al Bell, who was the president and owner of Wattstax at the time of the concert.) This set features a complete recording of the L.A. Memorial Coliseum concert, including on-stage speeches and other commentary. It also comes with a 68-page full-color book containing an introduction by Al Bell, the creator of Wattstacks, as well as new essays by Rob Bowman and A. Scott Galloway.
