The program also features four beautiful miniatures. [Track Listing] ◆Mendelssohn: Cello Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op. 58: Completed in 1843. Dedicated to Count Viegorski, a Polish-Russian nobleman and master cellist. It is well known that when the Schumanns visited Russia in 1844, they were so impressed by Count Viegorski’s performance of this piece that Schumann dedicated his new piano quartet to the count. First Movement: Sonata form beginning with a brilliant theme in D major. A dynamic dialogue between the piano and cello. Second Movement: B minor. A fairy-like scherzo in typical Mendelssohn style. Third Movement: G major. A dialogic structure in which a Bach-style chorale accompanied by solemn piano arpeggios alternates with the cello’s emotive melody. Fourth Movement: D major. A brilliant and technically demanding rondo finale. ◆Mendelssohn: Song Without Words in D major, Op. 109: Completed in 1845. Although “Lieder ohne Worte” are originally intended for solo piano, this piece is a rare exception, having been written from the outset for cello and piano; it is dedicated to Lise Christiani, an unfortunate female cellist who died of cholera at the age of 27 during a tour of Russia. ◆Mendelssohn: On the Wings of Song: Published in 1827. An arrangement of the famous art song based on a poem by Heine. ◆Schubert: Sonatina in D minor for Arpeggione, D. 821: Completed in 1824. Composed for the newly invented instrument, the “Arpeggione.” First Movement: A contrast between the melancholic first theme and the bright second theme. Second Movement: E major. A slow movement with a beautiful, prayer-like melody. Third Movement: A major. A light-hearted rondo in the style of a folk dance. ◆ Schubert: “Night and Dream”: Completed in 1827. An arrangement of a masterpiece art song based on a poem by Matthias von Collin, depicting a tranquil night scene. ◆ Schubert: Lullaby: Completed in 1816.
