Piano music by Ukrainian geniuses at the mercy of the state sees the light of day Here comes a rare album of three Ukrainian composers who, since the days of the former Soviet Union, have remained indistinguishable from their Russian counterparts. The world premiere recordings of Gozemput and Yavnina, in particular, are the first recordings of their music. Matvei Gozemput (1903-1960) was born in Kiev. After the war, he became a victim of the anti-Semitic movement of the Stalinist era and fled to Kazakhstan, where he became ill from stress and died at the age of 57, without a place to stay after returning to Kiev. He is said to have composed "24 Preludes," but only half of them were published; the rest were lost. The diverse influences of Romantic expressionism and contemporary popular music, including jazz, combine to form a very appealing fusion. Nikolai Sylivansky (1916-1985) was born and raised near Kharkov and trained in Leningrad and Moscow. He returned to his hometown after the war and was appointed professor of piano at the Kiev Conservatory in 1968. His "24 Preludes," published in 1966 and 1974, are as original and emotionally profound as the masterpieces of Shostakovich and Kabalevsky. Evgeniya Yavnina (1918-2000) was a female composer under Shevarine. Her uncle was Yuri Martov, who founded the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party with Lenin. Like Gozemput, she, too, suffered anti-Semitic persecution and was shut out of the music world until Stalin's death, depriving her of any means of earning a living. Her few piano works, "Six Preludes," are full of unique harmonies and intense emotions, and are a great pleasure to listen to. King International
