Celebrating the 2020 Thierry Schertz Prize! Jean-Paul Gasparyan, winner of the Thierry Schertz Prize at the 2020 Gstaad Festival, has recorded Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Babadzhanyan's "The Hero's Ballad"! The Ballad of the Hero"! He has released three discs of solo piano concertos by Rachmaninoff and Chopin on the French EVIDENCE label, but this is his first concerto recording! The Gstaad Music Festival is held in Gstaad, Switzerland (a mountain village famous for the "Goldendepas Line", a panoramic railroad line that crosses Switzerland), and is known for attracting talented young musicians from all over the world. The "Thierry Schertz Prize" was established as a tribute to Thierry Schertz, one of the founders of the festival.One of the participants will be given the opportunity to record and release a CD on the Claves label, with an additional prize of a CD release, and has been awarded to Timothy Ridout on viola (2019 winner), Anastasiya Kobekina on cello (2018 winner), Anais Godumar on harp ( 2015 Prize), Joseph Mauck on piano (2006 Prize), and Emmanuel Seysson on harp (2005 Prize), all of whom are now world-class performers.Born in France in 1995, Gasparyan studied at the Paris Conservatory with Jacques Louvier's He has played Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 before joining Jacques Levier's class at the Conservatoire de Paris. He has studied with world-class pianists such as Aldo Ciccolini, Michel Bellof, and Michel Dalbert. Rachmaninoff's music unfolds on an overwhelming scale. His music has a passionate spirit that flows from his own roots while inheriting French pianism, such as the solid hitting of the keys and the way he plays the melody that makes one gasp. Needless to say, Rachmaninoff is a master of technique, but even just listening to this performance, one can tell that he has a unique interpretation of his own personality.The coupling piece is "Ballad of a Hero" by Armenian composer Babadzhanyan. The enchanting piano melody and the magnificent orchestra in this work with Babadzhanyan's typical folkloric language are indescribably charming.
