The year 2010 marks the 200th anniversary of Robert Schumann’s birth. To commemorate this occasion, American pianist Zimon Barth has recorded Schumann’s late piano works in collaboration with his longtime friend, Christoph Eschenbach, who will celebrate his 70th birthday in February. The album features “Introduction and Allegro appassionato” and “Introduction and Concerto-style Allegro” for piano and orchestra. Sandwiched between these two pieces as a “slow movement” is “Variations on the Last Theme” for solo piano, presented in a way that makes it sound like a “piano concerto.” As an encore, Eschenbach (first piano) and Bart perform a duet of “Etudes for Pedal Piano,” arranged by Debussy.
