Jazz serves as the core, intersecting with post-rock and ambient A gem of an album by the SML members, featuring JEFFPARKER This album marks the debut solo release from International Anthem, led by Adelaide, Australia-based bassist and composer Anna Butters. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2014, she has become a highly sought-after musician both in the studio and on tour, collaborating with a diverse range of artists including Makaya McCraven, Phoebe Bridgers, Jason Isbell, and Andrew Bird. In particular, her work with Jeff Parker’s ETAIVtet and as a core member of SML has propelled her to the forefront of the West Coast creative scene. She says this album began with a structured, composition-driven approach. Amid a hectic post-tour schedule, she imposed constraints on herself—such as “not letting the bass function merely as a bass”—and shaped the songs by accumulating compositions in short bursts of time. The project later evolved into a full band at BIGEGO Studio in Long Beach, with the participation of longtime collaborators such as Josh Johnson (saxophone), Gregory Uhlmann (guitar), and Ben Lumsdaine (drums/production). Through recording and post-production, the sound was refined to achieve a balance between meticulous structure and a natural, organic feel. The album unfolds through an interplay of groove-oriented beats, cinematic spatiality, and intricate rhythmic structures, resulting in a work that reflects the very musical relationships nurtured within the community.
