A groundbreaking project in which the pianists engaged in an improvised dialogue on two Steinway pianos while completely “blind”! The latest album by Johanna Zummer, a pianist who moves effortlessly between classical and jazz, has been released on the prestigious German jazz label “ACT.” This project was inspired by a vivid experience from several years ago when Zummer performed with Igor Levit: during his rendition of Schumann’s “Scènes forestières,” she responded with improvisation, giving rise to an extremely free-form dialogue (Dialoge). Four leading figures in the contemporary classical piano world—Igor Levit, Kit Armstrong, Danae Delken, and Claire Fuanti—appear as guest artists. The album’s most distinctive feature is its “spontaneity,” taken to the absolute extreme. Zummer was kept completely in the dark about which pieces the guests would play right up until the moment of the live recording; he took great care to ensure he did not even hear their warm-up pieces beforehand, capturing his intuitive reactions to a pure “first-time listening experience.” Two Steinway grand pianos (KM054 and KM155, manufactured by Hamburg-Krankmanufaktur) were placed side by side in the studio, and Zummer seamlessly responded to and develops. At times, the guests themselves are inspired by Zummer’s playing and join in the improvisation, resulting in a thrilling and highly artistic recording where the boundaries between score-based interpretation and improvisation are completely blurred.
