Exploring the Evolution of 20th-Century American Music Through a Focus on Original Chamber Music Instrumentation Three American masterpieces performed by Oxalis, a skilled ensemble from Belgium. A key feature of this recording is its commitment to the original instrumentation. “Appalachian Spring” is a ballet originally composed for a 13-piece chamber orchestra and premiered in 1944. Later, when Copland himself arranged it into a suite, he adapted it for an orchestra featuring two wind sections, various percussion instruments, and a harp. Here, the ensemble performs the suite using the original score. With an instrumentation of four violins, two violas, two cellos, double bass, flute, clarinet, bassoon, and piano, the sounds produced by each musician feel remarkably intimate. Adams’ *Shaker Loops* is a masterpiece of post-minimalism, originally written as a string septet for three violins, a viola, two cellos, and a double bass. It later became commonly performed by string orchestras as well. The original version included here retains the delicate sound characteristic of chamber music as its core, achieving a striking effect. Closing out the album is “Miran,” a bassoon quartet written for a classical ensemble by the famous jazz trumpeter Marsalis. This album showcases the vibrant evolution of 20th-century American music.
