A Collection of Accessible Sonatas Full of Ingenuity ◆The 20th-century composer Martinů wrote accessible music using sophisticated techniques, and many of his works, particularly in the field of chamber music, have become established as part of the active repertoire. ◆This album features two unique sonatas for flute, violin, and piano, as well as one flute sonata and one violin sonata. 【Track Listing】 ◆Sonata for Flute, Violin, and Piano, H.254 (1937). Composed in Paris and dedicated to Blanche Honegger, the violinist and flutist who was Moïse’s stepdaughter. It is characterized by an instrumentation reminiscent of Baroque-era “sonatas for two high-pitched instruments.” ◆ Sonata for Flute and Piano, H. 306 (1945): A work written for George Roland, principal flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The trills imitating birdsong are particularly interesting. ◆ Madrigal Sonata for Flute, Violin, and Piano, H. 291 (1942): A work composed during his exile in the United States. It is characterized by a lively dialogue between the instruments, and toward the end, the flute plays a melody reminiscent of birdsong. ◆ Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano, H. 303 (1944): One of Martinů’s masterpieces in the chamber music genre. Composed of four movements, it incorporates rhythms from Czech folk music. 【Performers】 ◆Ambroise Aubran (Violin): Studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in France and UCLA, and currently serves as an associate professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He plays a Matteo Goffriller. ◆Josselin Aubran (Flute): Principal flutist of the Lyon National Opera Orchestra. He has appeared as a guest artist with many renowned orchestras and is active internationally as a soloist and chamber musician.
