Description:

The Upright Pleyel Played by the Genius Lyubimov! The sound of this renowned instrument, made in 1843, which Chopin likely chose and played. With a vast and wide-ranging repertoire that transcends time, coupled with his exceptional interpretations and masterful period playing technique, the Russian prodigy Alexei Lyubimov has earned immense acclaim and support as a living legend among fortepianists. Making his debut on the NIFC label, the prodigious Alexei Lyubimov plays an instrument that is neither a modern piano nor a historical grand piano, but rather an “upright piano (pianino)” with serial number 10112, crafted in 1843 by the renowned French master Pleyel! In 1843, at Pleyel’s factory, Chopin selected an upright piano with “Serial Number 10113” for his own apartment and, at the same time, chose an upright piano with “Serial Number 10112” for his patron (and neighbor), Natalia Obreskov. it is believed that Chopin must have frequently played this “10112” as well when called upon to do so at social gatherings, making the “10112” that Lyubimov is playing here one of the instruments with a particularly deep connection to Chopin! Incidentally, the Paris Museum of Music houses a Pleyel grand piano (serial number 7267) purchased by the Obreskov family in 1839, which Chopin played from that year until 1841; this fact alone gives a glimpse into the depth of the relationship between the “Poet of the Piano” and this family. By using this “Pleyel upright”—which has such a deep connection to Chopin—Lyubimov is undertaking the grand challenge of recreating the sound and atmosphere that would have been heard when Chopin and his students performed the Classical repertoire on this instrument in the Paris study salons, which were closed to the public at the time, and furthermore, of transforming the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven into the musical imagery of Chopin’s world using this “magic” (the Pleyel upright). Lubimov and the Pleyel upright piano set out to “Chopinize” the great composers who preceded Chopin. What will the result be—!? Stay tuned! Tokyo M Plus
